Graiae

Daughters of Phorcys and Ceto. Initially they were two, by name Pamphredo and Enyo, who were augmented by a third, Deino. White-haired old women from birth, they possessed but one tooth and one eye which they passed from one to the other. They were sisters of the Gorgons, who were involved with the myth of Perseus according to which on his way to slay Medusa, Perseus contrived to steal the eye and the tooth at the moment the old hags were passing it around and forced them to relate where he would find Medusa. Another version says that he asked where he would find the Nymphs who had the means whereby his task could be completed. [p. 86]
