Grypes

Grypes [Gryphons] - Mythical beasts with the head of an eagle and the body of a winged lion, they were guardians of the treasures of Apollo in the land of the Hyperboreans situated beyond Scythia. They warred against the mythical race of the Arismaspians who were one-eyed and had sought to seize the treasures over which they watched. The legend of the Gryphons originated in Egypt where they were believed to be the personification of the sun. From Egypt the legend spread to Minoan Crete, and thence to the rest of Greece. As beasts belonging to the god of light Apollo, the sun god often rode on their backs to visit his sanctuaries at Delphi and Delos. [p. 86]
