Hydra of Lerna

Daughter of Typhoeus and Echidna. She was of gigantic size and had nine heads, eight of which were mortal and one immortal. She lived on the banks of the lake of Lerna and would often forage in the neighborhood to devour the living. Heracles, with the help of Iolaos, the son of Iphicles and Automedusa, destroyed the monster. Heracles encountered the Hydra on a small elevation near the spring of Amymone, and was able to kill the serpent only when Iolaos burnt the stumps of the heads that were severed by Heracles. The immortal head was buried by Heracles on the road between Lerna and Eleounta. [p. 86]
