Alkyd paintings dry thoroughly enough to be varnished within a month after they are finished. Picture varnishes made of dammar or methacrylate resin in simple solution can be applied to provide protection against grime and atmospheric pollution. More dilute solutions of the resins can be applied as retouch varnish 18 hours after the painting session. Directions for the studio manufacture of these varnishes and for their application to the picture can be found on pages 48, 84 [in the book]. When they have become dirty, such varnishes can be removed with solvents that will not affect the dried alkyd paint. [p. 201]
